    A verteran of 14 years with the CIA, where he rose to executive assistant to the Executive Director, Marchetti grew disillusioned, and resigned in 1969. His efforts to pull the cover on what he considered unethical and anti-democratic practices, lack of government oversight, and counterproductive policies, were not well received by the agency. They took him to court, to prevent publication of his book, finally managing to force deletion of some 168 passages. The revelations it nevertheless contains provoked international outcry, and further congressional investigations into the CIA, as initiated by Woodward's Pentagon Papers in 1971 (which the government also sought to suppress in court, when first published as a series of newspaper articles), leading to substantial restructuring of ...
