Title: Photographic "Images of America: Westwood" book released Author: Staff Writer Publisher: Westwood Wicked Local Date: 3/28/09 A reprinting of the book "Images of America: Westwood" for the Westwood Historical Society is now available. The author, Maureen Taylor, has autographed the books which are for sale at Décor and More, 655 High St., Westwood. They also have the Westwood Historical Society's seal. The Westwood Historical Society worked with Maureen to produce a Westwood issued of the "Images of America" series by Arcadia Publishing. The goal of the publisher is to produce a book for every town in America; or if the town is small, then publish a regional issue. Arcadia Publishing, established in 1993, is the leading local history publisher in the United States and is best known for the "Images" series which chronicles the history of communities from Bangor, Maine, to Manhattan Beach, California. With more than two hundred vintage black-and -white photographs, each title celebrates a town or region, bringing to life, the people, places, and events that define the community. Acadia also publishes other series such as Images of Rail, Images of Sports, Images of Baseball, Black America, Postcard History and other areas of historical interest. Many of Westwood's neighboring towns have also had books published by Arcadia. The Westwood publication is popular for residents' own reading or for gift giving. Maureen Taylor was featured in the Wall Street Journal's October 12, 2007 edition for her work as a "photo detective." The Journal wrote, "With millions of Americans obsessively tracing their roots, Ms. Taylor has emerged as the nation's foremost historical photo detective." What a recommendation to buy her book featuring Westwood. For more information contact the Westwood Historical Society at 781-326-5334 or email them at westwoodhistorical@comcast.net.
Synopsis
Westwood began as West Dedham, a small collection of farms owned by Dedham residents. At the time of incorporation in 1897, the population was only twelve hundred people. Westwood grew rapidly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as Bostonians from Beacon Hill built large houses and developers purchased tracts of land to build homes on small lots. Before the highways and railroads, stagecoaches and trolleys traveled the town's two post roads-High and Washington Streets. At one time, Westwood even had an airport. Today, the community has more than thirteen thousand citizens. In Westwood, rare photographs from the Westwood Historical Society, the Westwood Public Library, and private collections offer glimpses into the town's past. The images include sawmills, icehouses, metal foundries, and many small businesses. Within these pages are photographs of Fellowship Farm, a socialist experiment under Rev. George E. Littlefield; the Fisher School, now home of the Westwood Historical Society; Betsey Baker's bonnet-making industry; Buckmaster Pond; the Willow Farm and Windsor Road neighborhoods; schools and churches; and landmarks lost to demolition and fire. Westwood illustrates the transformation of the town from a farming community to a modern suburb of Boston., Westwood began as West Dedham, a small collection of farms owned by Dedham residents. Another wonderful transaction with this company! I believe this is my 3rd purchase with multiple books in each order and I’ve yet to be disappointed. Books arrived as described - great used condition. Packaging wasn’t great but it’s free shipping and they made it to me intact, so no complaints. The price is unbeatable. Will definitely continue to purchase from them! Highly recommend.
