Notes
Solomon's Request BIOGRAPHY Picture sitting on top of Mauna Loa, the earth's largest live volcano, while watching Haley's comet collide with your landscape, instantaneously annihilating the complete area within your view, causing an earthquake that registers 9.5 on the Richter scale. As your world is rocking you catch your breath and gaze upon the fiery sky, breathing in the molten horizon. You realize that instead of dying a cruel death, you are indeed alive and kicking, and in fact, more alive than ever! Wow! How does the music you listen to move you? O.k. Maybe we're being a little silly with the word pictures. But when you see the energy bolting forth from their live act, and you feel the power and tenacity being unleashed upon you in the form of raging vocals, razor-sharp guitar riffs, and rock melodies that refuse to be jarred from the playbacks of your mind, you will come to realize that Solomon's Request is a rock band to be reckoned with, and that they are your band. Coming off of their debut release Unafraid, Solomon's Request has taken a whole new approach with the new project, BETTER LEFT SAID. 'One of our main goals here was to put out a heavy rocker from beginning to end without giving the listener a whole lot of time to breathe' says Bill Waslar, the band's singer. 'We wanted to get back to what we enjoy the most: simple, raw, hard-driving guitar rock.' And that's exactly what they did. No frills, hammer-to-the-anvil, meat and potato style rock & roll diddio. 'If a song is well-written, and has meaning and power,' Waslar establishes, 'too much production and extra noise can hide the heart of the song from the listener. On this album what you're getting is a fresh dose of simplicity'. Assisting Waslar with part of the new album's production is Heaven's Wish front man Ron Vanderlip, who used his vast expertise sculpting parts of He Never Goes Away and Hardest Part Is Over, along with providing musical mentoring for the band. At the recording helm and assisting the band with the album's engineering responsibilities is Dave Taylor. 'We are producing our own album,' says Waslar, 'but Dave provides the right balance, making sure the music is tight but not too polished.' Scorchers like Don't Even Go There and All My Days will have you cranking the volume up every time, Hardest Part Is Over will possess your vocal chords and have you chanting it's catchy chorus all the day long, while Die and This Means You will be sure to provoke a grab for the CD insert to read the lyrics. Bassist Steve Rhein is quick to point out Standing In The Fire as his personal favorite because of 'the interesting changes throughout the song.' Waslar explains the drive behind it: 'It is about answering the call that each of us has in our lives, even amidst rejection and un-acceptance. We've got to be true to ourselves.' With it's hooking melody entrenched in some rough-edged rock-rap by Rhein and guitar riffs straight out of the 80's, it's easy to see why this one is already a fan favorite. This song has a common trait with that of the others, and with the live show. Rhein describes it best with a simple but telling three-word answer: 'Energy, energy, energy'. New drummer Matt Butler not only adds to the mix with his unique left-handed hi-hat playing but also with his songwriting ability, as with God Who? and 2 Busy 4 Me. When asked what sets this band apart from others, he thoughtfully responds, 'I think the new music will really set us apart from what we used to be. The excitement, the fun, and the message all click together, and really give Solomon's Request something special!' Eh, more guitars, you say? Introducing Brandon Kimberly - AKA 'BK Burger' - guitar protégé extraordinaire for Solomon's Request, and quite transparent with the way he feels: 'I really don't care about recording, to be honest with ya, I really don't care about any of that stuff (that would all change during the course of recording), I just have fun playing.'
