  • Isn't intended to, and won't, replace the 1968 original for most listeners

I'm not a musician and have no formal music education, I'm just a music lover and an audiophile. So I don't really fully understand different keys and chords, let alone different tuning schemes. I've been a fan of Carlos and Switched On Bach since it first came out in 1968 when I was in 9th grade - it was my main introduction to classical music, and that version is "in my DNA". I would never know that this version has different tuning if I hadn't read about it in the notes - same as for a few other recordings that I have of baroque or other older music played on original instruments with different tuning. I just hear it and enjoy it. As others have commented, the timbres used this time around are more "tame" compared to those in the 1968 version [and REALLY obviously so in the legitimately totally different 2nd movement in the Third Brandenburg Concerto] - the two main goals of the 1968 version were to showcase the very distinct [Moog] synthesizer sounds as well as establish its legitimacy as a musical instrument for "real" music (not just "weird" avant garde "music"). This time around, Carlos' goal was to express a more mature interpretation of the music and the greater sophistication of the 2000-era synthesizers and recording equipment, NOT to grab listeners by the neck while yelling "WAIT 'TIL YOU HEAR THIS!!". So I like it, and will play it from time to time, but I will probably always prefer the original. Regarding the Dolby Surround encoding: I tried playing it on my home theater system with the Dolby Surround mode (and my speaker placement scheme parallels Carlos' recommendation). My system is extremely high quality 5.1 with stunning sound from high-definition discrete 5.1 music sources such as SACD and DVD-Audio [neither of which existed in 2000, I believe]. My reaction to this disc in Dolby Surround mode: Meh [that is an accepted real English word now, right?]. I'll stick with plain stereo. If you've never experienced hi-rez 5.1 music on a really good system, you might enjoy it as a novelty.

  • Pales Compared to the Original....

Not as good as the original by a far margin...

  • New (old) tuning - very engaging.

The new (old) tuning is unsettling at times but very interesting too. It takes many listens to understand it all.
