He not only offered a full refund but also explained clearly and politely that it could well be a compatability issue between my sons console and the controller. That turned out to be exactly the problem and was mainly down to me misreading the item description. The item was tested on PC using a gamepad tester and confirmed fully functional before dispatch. The issue may be related to console compatibility, though I can't confirm that for certain.
