  • Portrait of the Iceman

Albert Collins, aka The Iceman, aka Master of the Telecaster, was a dynamic performer, both as vocalist and guitarist with a spellbinding ''icepick'' tone. This double album collects the recordings he made for the Imperial label after Bob Hite of Canned Heat championed the Texas tornado. It bridges the period between his first Texas recordings, notably his signature instrumental Frosty, and the recordings he made for Chicago's Alligator label from the late 1970s, and which for overall quality I would have think his best, if for no other reason than his vocals get as much attention as that guitar. The Imperials are good, even great, and deserve attention. I'm sure I will find more to love on repeated listening. Albert Collins was one of the most outstanding live performers in my experience.
