Benedetto XV - Giacomo Della Chiesa (1854-1922) - è il papa del primo conflitto mondiale. Di fronte ai tragici eventi egli si impegnò fortemente con la sua azione pastorale, umanitaria e politica, al fine di propugnare i caratteri più alti e nobili del cristianesimo: l'amore, la giustizia, la solidarietà, la pace, l'aiuto anche materiale, da opporre ad una guerra da lui definita "inutile strage" e propiziare un'organizzazione dell'Europa e del mondo come consorzio di nazioni capace di un equilibrio interno al fine dello sviluppo di un'umanità libera, senza contrapposizioni di razza o di nazionalità, unita nella ricerca della giustizia sociale e del progresso. Prospettò con grande tenacia la Conciliazione fra la Chiesa e lo Stato in Italia, gettando le basi per quanto si realizzerà un decennio dopo la sua precoce morte. Favorì nell'ambito missionario lo sviluppo delle chiese locali e propiziò le condizioni politiche che permettessero il superamento dei protettorati ...
