The reason I called this review "new fangled '80's rock" is cuz even though the movie is about the hair metal scene from the '80's, the movie came out in 2001, and therefore I'm guessing the original songs for the soundtrack were recorded in 2000. I loved the movie - lots of fun - if you like '80's hair metal (I grew up on that stuff) and realize the movie is a satire, then you'll dig it - not nearly as funny as "This is Spinal Tap," but quite enjoyable.. just go with it. The music.. ZAKK WYLDE on lead guitar... Heya!! The band also featured Nick Cantanese on guitar - I think he's in Black Label Society with ZW but I'm not sure about that. Jeff Pilson from Dokken on bass, and the great Jason Bonham (son of Led Zep's drummer) on, you guessed it, drums. There are 2 vocalists singing the Steel Dragon songs. Neither are Markie Mark Wahlberg, although according to the special features on the dvd, he sang, or at least partially sang some of the tunes live. Both of the vocalists on the Steel Dragon songs are not well-known, but both have good voices. One of the vocalists might have been from the band Steelheart. I am guessing this because Steelheart has a song on one of their albums that also appears on the Rock Star soundtrack, but the song is not attributed to Steelheart. Just over half of the songs are recorded by Steel Dragon - the fictional band made up of the musicians I already mentioned. The reason I say the band is fictional is because before this movie came out, the band did not exist. They don't exist anymore either - too bad they didn't decide to tour - but then Zakk is in 2 bands already. Best tune by far is "We All Die Young." - Not the happiest lyrics, but just beautiful, mellow in parts and then slammin' heavy, amazing vocals .. it's why I bought the album. Another Steel Dragon tune I liked a lot was "Stand Up and Shout." - Real heavy - classic ZW squeelin' guitar playin'. " This song was written by Sammy Hagar. Other artists on the album - Kiss, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Ted Nugent. There were songs in the film by AC/DC and Def Leppard, but those songs are not on the CD. The AC/DC song was released in the early '90's anyway. The reason I didn't rate this album as excellent is mostly cuz two of the Steel Dragon tunes are lame and not worth listening to. I also think Motley Crue isn't much worth listening to either. But overall, a kickin' album. If you enjoy the flick, you'll like the soundtrack. 'Nuff said.Read full review
Rock Star the motion picture based on the Judas Priest change of singers history, Tim "Ripper" Owens for Rob Halford, got excellent music specially from the fictitious band created for that picture Steel Dragon, the musicians that also acted in the movie with the exception of the singers are Zakk Wylde lead guitar(Ozzy Osbourne, Blak Label Society), Jason Bonham drums(Bonham, Foreigner), Jeff Pilson bass(Dokken, Dio, Foreigner), Nick Catonese guitar(Black Label Society) and the lead singers Mike Matijevic (Steelheart) and Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen, Takara, Soul Sirkus, Journey and now solo). There are 6 songs of Steel Dragon in this record, 3 sung by Mike Matijevic, "We All Die Young" written by Matijevic, this is a cover of Steelheart from the "Wait" album that was played differently; "Blood Pollution" written by Twiggy Ramirez guitarrist of Marilyn Manson and "Long Live Rock And Roll" a RAINBOW cover written by Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie Dio; and 3 sung by Jeff Scott Soto, "Wasted Generation" witten by Desmond Child a producer of KISS and many other 80´s bands, "Livin The Life" written by Steve Plunkett, the lead singer of AUTOGRAPH an 80´s group and "Stand Up" written by Samy Hagar, the only bad thing is that the other 2 songs of Steel Dragon that hearing in the movie were not included in this record. Besides the songs mentioned before, we can hear classic songs of the 80´s interpreted by the original artist like "Wild Side" by Motley Crue, "Livin´ On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi, "Lick It Up" by KISS, among others; special attention deserves the precious ballad "Colorful" interpreted by The Verve Pipe, the band of Brian Vander Ark, the writter of the song and who played the role of the bassist of the tribute band of Mark Wahlberg in the movie. So if you enjoy the movie or if you live and love the 80´s hard rock this is the perfect cd for you.Read full review

This is a great C.D. I love the 80's genre of music and this fits the bill nicely. I bought the C.D. fr the "Steel Dragon" tracks as much of the guitar work was performed by Zakk Wylde of Ozzy and Black Label Society fame. Music is well produced and very 80's style. If you like bands like Ozzy, Dokken, and Ratt you should enjoy this C.D.
Great mix of rock classics and songs created for the movie.
