I have a sweet spot in my heart for these manual lenses of yesteryear. This particular lens is a lot of fun to work with and it provides a decent challenge. It's not a lens you're going to run around and snap a hundred pictures with in continuous mode. It's a lens you're going to take your time with, find your composition, take test shots, adjust and fine tune your focus, shutter speed and apature.

30 yr. professional news photographer. used many nikon cameras and lenses. this lens has the nikon snap, color and sharpness and rendors the image in a beautiful way. built tough to take the riggers of use, unlike the modern plastic lenses of today. i am now retired enjoying purchasing older manual glass and using them on a nikon d700, it is as good as it gets. thanks, bill.

It isn't exactly a very sharp less, especially at 5.6 (it's the wide-open setting for this lens). But for it's price, it's a nice alternative for the new 70-300s in case you just wanna get this focal length for some reason other than sports or anything with moving subjects. Because even focusing can be managed but if you need to freeze subjects the 5.6 aperture is not enough for taking photos with high-shutter speed and ISOs below 1000 to 800.

If you shoot the modern lenses, you're in for a shock. The sharpness of this lens is well beyond what they can do. It's heavy and may be subject to flare (who knows) but the greater detail is apparent. I'm comparing it to my 18-140 and 55-300, both lenses with a good reputation for sharpness. Manual focus is annoying but the photos are outstanding.

This is a usual high quality Nikon lens. I purchased to use for photographing birds and other wildlife for a book project. For those interested in film photography you will find excellent quality lenses and other equipment at low prices. Film can still produce quality that digital photography cannot.
