Serendipity is wonderful thing. Allow me to take a moment to explain. One Sunday morning, my wife came to invade my indulgence with the talking heads, in particular, Tim Russert. She was raving about this TCM movie called A Matter of Life & Death. Later, I went to imdb.com and found this David Niven was also called Stairway To Heaven. I search eBay & kept coming up with this Korean flick. I had seen Il Mare the Korean film Keanu Reeves’, The Lake House was based on and so I purchased Stairway To Heaven and Something Happened In Bali on eBay watch and soon began to wonder why I wasted my time watching American television. I now own 20 K-Dramas. But since this review is about Stairway To Heaven, I will spend a few minutes discussing this incredible movie. Stairway To Heaven is a delicious stew of family dynamics mixed with the most stimulating array of love-preventing scenarios as you can imagine. The other reviews here tell you enough about the plot to ensnare you, but I will do here is give you the emotional reasons for watching. If you’ve ever been in love (not lust), and you know the feeling of the tortured loss of a loved one, Stairway To Heaven will wring the tears out of you before you have a chance to say “…men don’t cry”, at least that’s what I thought before this flick. You can’t imagine the level of complex emotions this movie will evoke from within you. You’ll find yourself screaming at the evil stepmother while hating one of the sisters. You’ll be tortured by the affection a blended-family brother can have for his blended-family sister. You will find yourself justifying the near-taboo, and hating with everything, the status quo. This flick will toy with emotions you didn’t even know you had. It’s been said that K-Dramas are addicting. I warn you here & now; they are indeed! Why? Because they cause you to experience wonderful emotions you will not be accustomed to, and you’ll want that feeling again, and again, and again. I’ve read most of the reviews already posted here and Stairway To Heaven is truly a five star flick. One thing of note; please try to get the YA Entertainment version of any K-Drama. The subtitles are fantastic. By the way, an incidental benefit to viewing these is that you will slowly begin to pick up the language and its conjugative inflections. And you will marvel how wonderfully modern South Korea is. It’s not like you would believe and I personally can’t wait to visit Seoul. I like these movies so much that I am taking a Korean language course so that I can heighten my experience even more. Don’t be afraid to invest in the hefty price of this box-set. After you get to the end, you will realize that it was a bargain at twice the price. Further, you should find and buy Winter Sonata and Something Happened in Bali right away. Why? Because when you’re done with Stairway To Heaven, you’ll want another addictive jolt right away. And finally, and you can quote me here; don’t screw around and lose you job by being constantly late to work. Many viewers of K-Dramas report watching till 2 ~ 3 am unable to stop, knowing full well that they had to go to work in the morning. Trust me, it WILL happen to you and you will drag your tired and sleepy carcass to work the next day unable to concentrate and you’ll find yourself anxious to get home to see the next installment. Stairway To Heaven, one helluva movie, I guarantee it. Mike Way, movies; the reel dealRead full review
One of my personal favorites. It's a massive onslaught of emotions. It's a WILD RIDE. bring a box of tissues and some caffine. From childhood to the end this drama takes you places no western tv has ever taken you. If you liked Love story, this drama leaves that in the dust. A young girl, who's mother has died of an illness, grows up neighbors to a young boy, who's father has also died. They become fast friends in a lonely world. The time for higher education comes, and the boy who's mother is a cherbol (family owned conglomerates) sends him off overseas for his education. The girl who's supposed to go stays behind because her father remarried the evil step mother (along with her two problem kids) and it wouldnt be fair for her to go and her new siblings to stay behind. Then the torture begins. The girl is too dedicated to her father to let him know about the abuse she gets whenever he's not around. 4 years pass.. The evil stepsister has stolen the girls letters and just about everything else she owns. She wants the rich boyfriend too who she learns about thru the letters. The phone rings.. the boy is arriving at the airport, The evil sister tries to stop them reuniting.. the drama's music sends tingles down your spine, The race to the airport is on.. who will win? The boy, is now a man and he's returning to korea and the girl he left behind... he's come into his inheritance.. and that my friends is just where the story begins. What a ride this drama is. I think i will watch it again for the fifth time. The very best of K-drama! You can find treasures like this on ebay. Try to get the YA Entertainment version like this one is. Look for the YA logo on the box. Then you can rest assured you will get a quality product with good subtitles. These sell for quite a bargain on ebay. Remember tho, for this particular drama, BRING A BOX OF TISSUES!Read full review
