A Classic of Modern Opera
This is a great recording of what is, in my opinion, a great opera. Unusual subject - maybe. It certainly raises a lot of questions while being thoroughly entertaining. John Adams' music is sometimes classed as 'minimalist', yet here is to be found a rich, colourful palette: raw, exciting, sad, funny, explosive, atmospheric. I'd become familiar with the work through Spotify, and I also have the DVD of a later performance, but I wanted to own this CD set, and to able to study the libretto (by Alice Goodman, which is included). Unlike rock albums, classical CDs don't come with Parental Advisory labels, and this set, unlike the Udo de Waart version does not omit the big expletive in the last act, in case you were thinking of listening to it with the kiddies. It will take a number of hearings to catch all the good things in this opera, and that's no labour, as it's a terrific piece. It doesn't strike me as satirical; it doesn't demonize Nixon or Mao, although Madame Mao comes over as something of a she-devil. It just seems that for all their flaws, and for all the unwise and destructive things that people do, sometimes, they try to do something good, but sometimes that means trying to lift a weight they cannot possibly sustain, and the novelty of doing good soon wears off. For me, it will take a very long time for the novelty and delight of this opera to even begin to wear off.
