  • A Classic of Modern Opera

    This is a great recording of what is, in my opinion, a great opera. Unusual subject - maybe. It certainly raises a lot of questions while being thoroughly entertaining. John Adams' music is sometimes classed as 'minimalist', yet here is to be found a rich, colourful palette: raw, exciting, sad, funny, explosive, atmospheric. I'd become familiar with the work through Spotify, and I also have the DVD of a later performance, but I wanted to own this CD set, and to able to study the libretto (by Alice Goodman, which is included). Unlike rock albums, classical CDs don't come with Parental Advisory labels, and this set, unlike the Udo de Waart version does not omit the big expletive in the last act, in case you were thinking of listening to it with the kiddies. It will take a number of hearings ...
