      Long bolts are too long and short bolts too short

      351M Ex Manifold bolt kit. The long bolts were 1/4" too long so they had to be cut other wise they wouldn't torque down. They would hit the interior of the head before tightening. Short bolt were 1/4" to short. They would only be 3 turns in leaving an additional 1/2" of thread in the head unused, and the torque spec being pulled on just 3 turns of thread. So t he short bolts were unuseable. They were replace with Grade 8 bolts from the farm store.. If the manifold can't be torqued to spec, you will blow out the gasket and the extra air being sucked in will crack the manifold.
