The spacing between the HDMI and DVI sockets on my graphs card is too close to permit a HDMI to DVI adaptor to be plugged in when a DVI cable is already plugged in. This short HDMI plug to DVI socket cable resolves the issue. Now I can connect two monitors with DVI cables.
