About this product

Product Information

Tom Jones is rightly regarded as Fielding's greatest work, and one of the first and most influential of English novels. This carefully modernized edition is based on Fielding's emended fourth edition text and offers the most thorough notes, maps, and bibliography. The introduction uses the latest scholarship to examine how Tom Jones exemplifies the role of the novel in the emerging eighteenth-century public sphere.

I bought this book to read for a class, and I looked at the 900 pages of Tom Jones rather nervously. As I am reading it, however, I have found myself laughing out loud more than I ever have while reading a book from the 1800s (or any decade since then, besides). Though the language can be a bit formal at times (every chapter is introduced by a bit of narrative or commentary by the author), the story is enjoyable and surprisingly easy to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who isn't turned off by a few thees or hath thous.
