Here's a film that literally takes you on a runaway train ride of action and emotion. Jon Voight turns in a powerful performance of an escaped felon with a mixed bag of philosophy about life and vengeance. He takes you through the disgusting entrails of the prison out into the merciless harshness of winter and finally onto the backs of four iron beasts out of control. And there you are on the runaway train and you cannot stop until the end of the line. One thing I found alluring was the almost evil nature lent to these train locomotives by the five-fingered organ fugue signalling its emergence through a cloud like some bad dream come alive and its relentless nature building with some well done percussion and bass lines in the soundtrack. The collison of the runaway train with that caboose of the other train was well done - so very powerful. Eric Roberts was superb in this supporting role. And what a treat to see Rebecca DeMornay appear in this film! So, sit back, turn up the bass and get ready for a real ride. Excellent!Read full review
This DVD was published during the late 1990's, an era when there was a rush to put many movies on DVD quickly. The DVD format was being marketed as new, trendy and high-tech. As a result of this marketing campaign, many movies had to be quickly made ready to go on DVD in order for there to be a large selection on the store shelf. Also, the movies that the publishing houses were choosing to put on DVD at that time were those that would appeal to the 35-45 year old male (major marketing group) of 1998... so a lot of 70s and 80s action movies found their way to DVD as well as contemporary flicks. This version of the DVD is from that time period, and is little more than a menu screen and the movie itself. I like the simplicity of the DVD... not a zillion previews, no lengthy FBI warnings, no logos that take a long time to present, and no drawn-out animations between menu screens. You click "Chapters"... and boom you're there! It will be nice to eventually have special features for Runaway Train like Director's Commentary, and Making-Of featurette, and a "Then-and-Now" to revisit the filming locations. But until that day, it is good that this movie is at least on DVD, even though its a basic publication.Read full review
This film is exactly how I remember seeing it in early 1986. I went with a friend to see it on the big screen and it was a very excellent movie. The DVD brings back some good memories.
