Striggio's 40-part Mass was lost for centuries, and this is the first recording following its rediscovery. It's an astounding work, and I'm sure there will be more recordings made in future, but it's hard to see how this one could be bettered. The setting with voices and instruments may seem strange to those familiar with what we now think of as a tradition of unaccompanied choral singing from the period, but it is authentic - the singers would have had instrumental backing in the original performances. The work is likely to appeal to anyone who enjoys Tallis' 'Spem in alium', which was inspired by Striggio's Mass - and is another of the works on the CD, also with the unfamiliar backing of period instruments. The second disc of the set is a DVD with the main works from the CD in 5.1 surround audio, for those who have the technology, and a short documentary on the making of the recording - the latter just 13 minutes long. However, the 70 minutes of outstanding music on the CD alone means that there is no reason to feel short-changed by this set.Read full review
