La decouverte de la geometrie non euclidienne par Gauss, Bolyai et Lobatchevski, entre 1820 et 1830, est passee sur le moment presque inapercue. Il faudra attendre la publication de la correspondance de Gauss et Schumacher, a partir de 1860, pour qu'un nouvel interet pour ce sujet se manifeste. Celle-ci revele en effet le credit accorde par le prince des mathematiciens a la geometrie non euclidienne et aux travaux de Lobatchevski. C'est le debut d'une renaissance de cette discipline. De nouvelles recherches mathematiques sont effectuees; en meme temps s'engagent les premieres discussions epistemologiques. Elles se poursuivront jusque vers 1900, date a laquelle on peut considerer que la geometrie non euclidienne est largement acceptee par la communaute scientifique. Ce phenomene de renaissance, regulierement mentionne par les historiens, n'avait jusqu'a maintenant pas fait l'objet d'une etude propre; le but de ce livre est donc de combler une lacune. Il presente et commente un vaste eventail de textes aussi bien mathematiques qu'epistemologiques. Certains d'entre eux sont extraits de correspondances inedites ou d'ouvrages peu connus et difficilement accessibles. Une place particuliere est reservee a la reception de la geometrie non euclidienne par les contemporains.
