I knew many of the facts about Jack Johnson for years, having read much in the past including Nat Fleischer’s assessment that he was the greatest heavyweight champion of all, and the statement after their fight by James Jeffries that he couldn’t have beaten Johnson on the best day of his life. I grew up in the Joe Louis era, since I was born a month after he won the heavyweight championship, and admired him greatly. But one thing always bothered me about Louis; he always seemed to me to be too humble. Whenever he made a public statement, his groveling was unworthy of an athletic hero, seemingly the person who, as John L Sullivan always was have said to proclaim, could “Lick any man in the world!” Of further concern to me was that many blacks thought that this humility of Louis was a ... Blacks seemed to be relieved that during Louis’ reign they were not required to apologize for his behavior. Johnson’s exploits had been an embarrassment to many blacks. Instead of being celebrated as were Dempsey and Ruth, and about sixty years later the sexual frolics of Joe Namath, grist for the mill in many locker rooms and bars, Johnson’s behavior caused him to be vilified even to the extent that Congress and the Justice Department became involved. He was driven from the country by the only application to my knowledge of an Ex Post Facto law, contrary to the US Constitution. The popular belief was that Johnson’s weakness was that he could not remember his place because he was black. Instead, his strength was that he could not forget that he was a man!

Boxing and American History Lesson in one
This documentary is very entertaining and a very good lesson in American history. The people who are interviewed have such great enthuiasm and passion for the subject matter, they make it even more interesting. The footage from the turn of the 20th Century is incredible. It's hard to imagine that boxing matches caused riots in this country but it's all explained.
