Medios auxiliares para el diagnostico microscopico del paludismo consiste en una serie de 12 laminas plastificadas de tamano A4 que pueden ayudar a establecer el diagnostico microscopico del paludismo humano y servir tanto de instrumento practico para los profesionales sanitarios que realizan habitualmente ese diagnostico como de instrumento didactico para los estudiantes y el personal en formacion. En la compilacion de esta nueva edicion se han tenido en cuenta las aportaciones de una amplia gama de profesionales y expertos que han utilizado la segunda edicion de Medios auxiliares para el diagnostico microscopico del paludismo (OMS, 2000). Las laminas contienen microfotografias que muestran las diversas especies y formas morfologicas del paludismo humano en extensiones sanguineas finas y gruesas. Hay descripciones de Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale y P. malariae, e instrucciones detalladas sobre la preparacion y uso de soluciones tampon y de tincion. Las microfotografias, todas con 1000 aumentos y tenidas con el metodo de Romanowsky, muestran muchas de las posibles variaciones de los parasitos causantes del paludismo. Se ilustran y explican los errores habituales en la realizacion de las extensiones y se dan consejos sobre la manipulacion de las muestras de sangre en condiciones seguras, con el fin de reducir al minimo la exposicion a los virus de la hepatitis y al VIH/sida. Se han anadido nuevos apartados sobre los anticoagulantes y el diagnostico de las infecciones mixtas y sobre la identificacion de otros parasitos frecuentes en las extensiones de sangre periferica. El hecho de que las laminas esten plastificadas las hace resistentes a las condiciones climaticas, por lo que resultan faciles de utilizar sobre el terreno y en el laboratorio.
