Ashes Of Time: Redux
This legendary film has been described by critis as "insanely gorgeous." I couldn't have put it better. It may be director Wong Kar Wai's most ambitious work and will certainly be remembered as his most breathtakingly realized. It took him 2 tries to get it right. It was first released in 1994 to critical raves and little commercial success but then in 2002 during the financial meltdown in Asia he was contacted by the wherehouse at which the negs were stored, telling him they were bankrupt and he must come and retreive his original negatives of the film that very night. He did and found the work badly cared for and in many cases out of the cans and in pieces, much of the sound lost for good. Thus began a real labor of love over 4 years, painstakingly re-cutting the film, digitally ... This legendary film has been described by critis as "insanely gorgeous." I couldn't have put it better. I also own a dvd of original film, which relies on heavy use of synthesizers (popular way to go in the 80s and 90s but which instantly date a film) and the new sound track is just terrific and a real positive addition. This disc also contains some interesting special features on the making and restoring of the film plus an extensive interview with Wong Kar Wai (who speaks great English, btw) on his philosophy of film-making and his brilliant group of collegues, most notably D.P. Christopher Doyle, surely one of the greatest cinematographers of all time. This movie is really an absolute Must for fans of Asian cinema, Wong Kar Wai and great and mysterious, atmospheric film-making. If you're like me, you'll find yourself gasping out loud throughout it at the beauty of this film. Other Wong Kar Wai Must-Sees: "In The Mood For Love", "Fallen Angels", his short film on the dvd "Eros" called "The Hand."

Ashes of Time
I enjoy this film simply because of the Cinematography. The plot is pretty difficult to comprehend, but if you enjoy Wong Kar-Wai's films, you would probably like this film. Chunking Express is also an incredible film by Wong Kar-Wai. If you enjoy great cinematography, watch this film. If you want story, I would go for another of his films.
