Fun if not epic.
The idea of a screen version that capture the spirit of Homer's epic tale is perhaps too much to ask. This version is a fun ride throught the various adventures of Odysseus, without trying to be an authoritative reinterpretation. The gaps that need filling in the plotline for it to make sense to a novice to the Trojan cycle of legends are plugged well. As far as watchability goes, some of the parts are hammed up by the 'extraordinary international cast' though the very nature of that cast inhibits a lot of the interaction between characters. The effects are imaginative (if not always convincing) but bring to life some of Homer's creations. This is a fun movie to watch and should be treated as such. A good film Fairly accurate to Homers epic. It does'nt compare though with Troy (DVD 2004)Brad Pitt for impact, quality and watchability in my opinion. I buy all films covering Homers poems. Troy is tops followed by the odyssey (DVD 2004 Armand Assante) then Helen of Troy (DVD 2003 Sienna Guillory) and bringing up the rear Helen of Troy (DVD 1955 Rossana Podesta and Brigitte Bardot). I love 'em all though Illiad and Odyssey fanatic.A good film Fairly accurate to Homers epic. The Odyssey (DVD 2004)
This is a superb teaching resource for anyone teaching Homer's Odyssey up to 16yo.Moving from Video to DVD also space saving within the classroom. Although a number of episodes are omitted completely and Odysseus' loses his men, not at the Cattle of the Sun, but at the peril of Charybdis, many areas are represented well.
