    About this product

    Product Information

The moving story of how, in just three generations, an ancient way of life was lost - as witnessed from the fields of a small Lake District farm As a boy, James Rebanks's grandfather taught him to work the land the old way. Their family farm in the Lake District hills was part of an ancient landscape- a patchwork of crops and meadows, of pastures grazed with livestock, and hedgerows teeming with wildlife. And yet, by the time James inherited the farm, it was barely recognisable. The men and women had vanished from the fields; the old stone barns had crumbled; the skies had emptied of birds and their wind-blown song. English Pastoral is the story of an inheritance- one that affects us all. It tells of how rural landscapes around the world were brought close to collapse, and the age-old rhythms of work, weather, community and wild things were lost. And yet this elegy from the Lake District fells is also a song of hope- how, guided by the past, one farmer began to salvage a tiny corner of England that was now his, doing his best to restore the life that had vanished and to leave a legacy for the future. This is a book about what it means to have love and pride in a place, and how, against all the odds, it may still be possible to build a new pastoral- not a utopia, but somewhere decent for us all.

This is my second time buying from this seller and I would definitely place another order in the future. This time I ordered three books and everything went well. The books arrived in great condition, matching the description. As always they are very carefully wrapped. The prices are great and the communication is always very kind and clear.. responses very quickly. Highly recommend this seller.

This book arrived in good condition and as described and good was good value as were the other books I ordered. Unfortunately the packaging didn't survive Royal Mails handling and this was the only book I received of five I had ordered. I contacted WeBuyBooks and they have been brilliant in trying to resolve the issue of the missing books. They are replacing one that they still have in stock though unfortunately are unable to do so for the other three so are issuing a refund for these.

This book is exactly as described and in excellent condition. I'm really pleased with the quality and the price I paid which very low and exceptional value for money. The book was very well packaged and dispatched and delivered very quickly in just a couple of days. Excellent communication throughout with the seller. Very friendly, helpful and prompt response. I have bought from this seller a few times and everything has always met or exceeded my expectations.

      Describing the Unknown.

You write, "Rate this product that you have just bought."-- If one has just bought it, how can one possibly have read it? --In any case, it is a present that I shall not get for some time yet, so, I refer you to the answer above. All I know is that this book has a huge reputation, and that it is written around a subject that i love.. Sorry, but you do this frequently, with books just bought; never giving anyone time to read any of them.. Yey, asking for an opinion each time. I'd like to help, but, please give us all a chance to read, that which we have bought. Many thanks ...
