Reviews
"Here, for our age, is [Marcus's] great work presented in its entirety, strongly introduced and freshly, elegantly translated." --Robert Fagles, Martin Hammond's translation of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations , like his Iliad and Odyssey , is the work of an unusually gifted translator, and one who understands the value added by careful attention to supplementary material. He writes natural English, direct and often eloquent; the text is well supported by effective notes and a characteristically thorough and well-planned index; Diskin Clay supplies a useful introduction. This is a fine volume, "Here, for our age, is [Marcus's] great work presented in its entirety, strongly introduced and freshly, elegantly translated." -Robert Fagles

Synopsis
A new translation of the philosophical journey that has inspired luminaries from Matthew Arnold to Bill Clinton in a beautiful hardcover gift edition, with a cover designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith World-changing ideas meet eye-catching design: the best titles of the extraordinarily successful Great Ideas series are now packaged in Coralie Bickford-Smith's distinctive, award-winning covers. Whether on a well-curated shelf or in your back pocket, these timeless works of philosophical, political, and psychological thought are absolute must-haves for book collectors as well as design enthusiasts. Written in Greek by an intellectual Roman emperor without any intention of publication, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a wide range of fascinating spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the leader struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. Spanning from doubt and despair to conviction and exaltation, they cover such diverse topics as the question of virtue, human rationality, the nature of the gods and the values of leadership. But while the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation, in developing his beliefs Marcus also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a series of wise and practical aphorisms that have been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and ordinary readers for almost two thousand years. To provide a full understanding of Aurelius's seminal work, this edition includes explanatory notes, a general index, an index of quotations, an index of names, and an introduction by Diskin Clay putting the work in its biographical, historical, and literary context, a chronology of Marcus Aurelius's life and career. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. The book is in like new condition; better than described. It was packaged securely in a bubblewrap envelope, not merely a plastic bag. The book was listed for a fantastic price, too. Thank you, HPB-Emerald, for another perfect transaction from a truly excellent Seller!

One of my new favorite books

About this particular copy: this is a nice hardcover book with a classically attractive cover, just small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, but just big enough to read without straining the eyes. There is a ribbon bookmark and I like the feel of the paper. Overall this is a rather charming package. Also, the introduction by Diskin Clay was very worthwhile. About the book in general: Marcus Aurelius has little to add to the Greek wisdom from the centuries leading up to his reign, but the unique context of an emperor in his inward reflections trying to cling to the highest ideal possible as though the world depended on it somehow becomes something that resonates with us common folk as we struggle to make the best of our own lives. The unpretentious poeticism of the author's prose is ...

  • A book that needs to be more widely read today

Meditations is not a book to sit and read. Its a personal diary that, while written thousands of years ago, is very relevant for today. Read a few pages, a single entry, and then relax, and decide if it has any meaning for you. Many won't, but you will be surprised at how many do.

  • Easy to carry, compact book. Great condition.

I was surprised by how beautiful the book looks, like a small bible you can either carry around in a bag, or just hold it in your hand and ponder upon its meditations.
