    With an obvious fondness for the Italian people the author writes in detail and sometimes with humour of the characters he meets .

    An insight into the work of a Field Police operative during the later stages of World War II and Naples in particular . I found the book very interesting because this part of the British Army was new to me .

    Utterly compelling account of Naples why the Allies invaded Southern Italy. Lewis was a very great writer.

    Well written and informative.

    This is a very well written account of the financial, physical and moral destruction that follows any major war. Desperate people doing desperate things to stay alive. Not an easy but certainly a valuable read.

    The terrible human race

    Reading only non fiction I believed I had read most of the tragic experiences of human beings. It revealed the great flaws in so called responsible beings when outside the surveillance of ' normal people' who would place a moral restraint on a terrible impulse.
