  • Highly fictionalized account, mildly entertaining western, surrounding events of the Modoc War.

You have to take into account that this film was made in 1954...long before truly balanced portrayals of Native Americans in film was common. So, this film does not really portray all the historical facts regarding the Native American experience or the white response. Nevertheless, this is the ONLY dramatized account of the Modoc War, and the film is mildly entertaining. Bronson is pretty OK in the film as Captain Jack. Hopefully, the film will lead people to do their own research on what 'really' happened. I own the DVD and will likely watch it again. Finally, I have to say that this is not the best film for Delmer Daves or Alan Ladd. A far better Alan Ladd western is George Stevens' 'Shane.'

  • Ladd vs Bronson in an Indian War.

Alan Ladd stars in this movie, fighting Charles Bronson as an Indian trying to keep tribal lands from settlers. Yes, we know that Bronson and others portraying Indians is not PC, but, this movie is from the 50s and was often the case. The film has a lot of exciting moments as Ladd tries to broker a peace deal with the Indians, which eventually turns into an all-out war. The scenery is beautiful, the actors do a good job, and the plot is good too. I highly recommend it.
