About this product

Product Information

Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2019 Not far from London, there is a village. This village belongs to the people who live in it and to those who lived in it hundreds of years ago. It belongs to England's mysterious past and its confounding present. It belongs to Mad Pete, the grizzled artist. To ancient Peggy, gossiping at her gate. To families dead for generations, and to those who have only recently moved here. But it also belongs to Dead Papa Toothwort who has woken from his slumber in the woods. Dead Papa Toothwort, who is listening to them all. Chimerical, audacious, strange and wonderful - a song to difference and imagination, to friendship, youth and love, Lanny is the globally anticipated new novel from Max Porter.

  • Book of the year so far

Innovative in style, gripping, heartening and heart rending in content, this is the best book I have read this year. The simple seeming narrative deals, without pretension with large themes- what it means to be human, how good and evil are necessarily entwined, the importance of truth, our relationship to nature and history, the power of art etc. At the same time it is a real page turner. Astonishing.

  • Interesting narrative and writing style

Arresting style, new to me. Although there is something of a time-warp, the narrative flows straightforwardly. Manageable size for a book group - not too long.

  • A complex read that can be read more than once.

The book is in almost new condition, and the content is intriguing! A very unusual story written in a very unusual way - a bit of a challenge, but worth the effort.

  • Well worth a read.

Slightly different from mainstream and took a little getting used to the nonlinear style.

  • Poetic and magical

Prepare to immerse yourself in a sensory feast. Beautiful to read, to look at - even the cover gives pleasure.
