PIONEERS She was sleek, cigar-shaped, and black. When she broke the choppy surface of Lake Pontchartrain, water rippled over her pectoral fins, and her flank glistened in the warm sunlight of early Louisiana spring.

  • Bringing History Alive

Yes, it is a cliched title, but Brian Hicks knows exactly how to knit a combination of historical information and archeological discoveries to bring the people of the past and their activities back to poignant life. And he does it well and compellingly in Raising the Hunley. The cost in time, effort and lives to create the first working war submarine is made real so that the story of discovering the bodies and the captain's lucky gold coin brought tears to my eyes. Who needs fiction when truth is so good.
