The Vivitar Series 1 28-90 1:2.8 is a vintage state of the art lens that will always have a place in film photography. I bought my first one 30 years ago because it was state of the art. Some may consider the 67mm diameter a drawback but the 1:2.8 apeture, zoom feature, and macro focusing more than makes up for that. I don't believe it has a comparable manual focus compeditor. Its speed, dependability, durability and flexability makes it a must have lens. It's consistent at all focal lengths, and just plain fun to use. I wouldn't consider parting with either of the two I have now.
Compared to other Wide Angle lens, the 28mm is a good basic lens to start off with if you are unsure if you want to take wide angle shots or not. I purchased it for the fact that I only needed a 28mm and not a 16mm or 24mm lens for the type of photography I take. The 16mm would have been too much of a wide angle for nature photography and the 24mm is close enough that for the price I chose the 28mm.
