"Rare and compelling in its compassion and its unassuming eloquence...her examples are so vivid and so ordinary they touch the hurt child in us all"-- The New York Magazine, "An unpretentious little book with an amazing impact...Many readers find themselves portrayed with an accuracy and empathy that seem uncanny, as if the author had been a silent, unseen witness to their childhood [and] their innermost and secret selves."-- Vogue, "Narcissismhas rarely been written about with the clarity and quiet insights of thismodest, thought-provoking work."-- WashingtonPost Book World

Synopsis
The bestselling book on childhood trauma and the enduring effects of repressed anger and pain Why are many of the most successful people plagued by feelings of emptiness and alienation? This wise and profound book has provided millions of readers with an answer--and has helped them to apply it to their own lives. Far too many of us had to learn as children to hide our own feelings, needs, and memories skillfully in order to meet our parents' expectations and win their "love." Alice Miller writes, "When I used the word 'gifted' in the title, I had in mind neither children who receive high grades in school nor children talented in a special way. I simply meant all of us who have survived an abusive childhood thanks to an ability to adapt even to unspeakable cruelty by becoming numb.... Without this 'gift' offered us by nature, we would not have survived." But merely surviving is not enough. The Drama of the Gifted Child helps us to reclaim our life by discovering our own crucial needs and our own truth., Why are many of the most successful people plagued by feelings of emptiness and alienation? A Classic

German psychoanalyst Alice Miller was an experienced interpreter of childhood trauma whether physical or emotional. She writes of the burden placed on a child by parents who are perceived as offering conditional love. The result is often a child who suppresses emotions in favor of pleasing others. This book has had a profound impact on reader's worldwide. The Drama of the Gifted Child is easy to read and easy to relate to. I highly recommend it to anyone who is taking a look back at his or her childhood.

  • The Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller

This was the most incredible book I have ever read! Alice Miller is brilliant! After reading "The Drama of the Gifted Child", I purchased nearly every other book that Alice Miller wrote. I have read others, however, so far, this one has had the most profound effect on me, and has changed my whole way of thinking about life. It was the heaviest and most thought provoking book I have ever read! In "The Drama of The Gifted Child", Alice Miller explains her theory of human nature, and her belief, based on her continuing studies and the endless studies of so many others, that human beings are all born good. Evil is something that comes from childhood hurts, wounds, abuse, etc. Although our parents may have done the very best that they could, most of us still become wounded and scarred at ...

  • Changed my life!!!

This book made a HUGE difference in my life. It is so incredibly point-on about how any kind of mis-parenting, no matter how large or small, can shape us. I knew this, I heard this 100 times, but the way Alice writes and the insight she has just hit me full on. A light bulb moment. Finally understanding why I never felt quite "integrated" with myself. Although this book is a bit more "clinical", if you are self-aware and love to dig deep, you'll get a lot out of this. Great for therapists, too.

  • Awesome book!

One of the most informative books on mother/child attachment bonds.
