    Charles Revson was a tyrant, but his determination, wile, and brilliant, innate marketing genius gave us cosmetics as we know them today. In a cosmetics world dominated by women, Revson began with nail enamel, then lipstick that matched it, onward to create a worldwide empire, and a Revlon Girl, to which every woman aspired. Around the time of WW II, only actresses and whores wore cosmetics, but that all changed with Revson and his contemporaries. Arden and Rubenstein and Lauder were aspirational to the average woman--Revlon was accessible, since it was sold in drug stores and probably Woolworth's. What's most exciting about this book is how the image of the Revlon Woman was created, how colors were selected and named, and how in tune with what women needed and wanted at the time ...
