Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover
This is the story of a much-maligned lady (Helen Hunt) who dates married men to avoid being hurt after a disastrous marriage. She gave up her one daughter (Scarlett Johansen) who has married well, featured in the posh magazine "Town & Country". The article of her daughter's marriage and their season in the Amalfi Coast of Italy gives our lady (Hunt) a goal. She sells her jewelry for a first class voyage to Italy where she meets the friends of her daughter's husband...eventually falling for one of them...adding a touch of romance and humor. The scenery of the Amalfi Coast and Italy itself is well worth watching this film. However, the plot has many twists which keep the viewer involved right until the last scene. Why remove most of Oscar Wilde's wit?
I watched the movie because it said "based on a play by Oscar Wilde". There are a number of Oscar Wilde movie-plays (play-movies?) out that I truly enjoyed. Not this one. I liked neither Ms. Johansson nor Ms. Hunt in their roles; probably the casting, maybe the acting was bad. The story was not very credible either; often I could not understand the motives, worries, and problems that the characters supposedly had. And shouldn't there be at least a tiny little sexual tension between Mr. Windermore and Mrs. Erlynne or between Mrs. Windermore and the Lord who was after her, or at least some wit? And why on earth did Mrs. Windermore love Mr. Windermore and vice versa, something they were not tired of telling us? If the acting was bland, the script should have saved the movie, but it did not. ... I watched the movie because it said "based on a play by Oscar Wilde". Sorry I am so harsh on this movie. The makers probably had the best of intentions (witty Oscar Wilde, carefree summer Italy, beautiful people, rich decor), but somehow it did not work - at least not for me

Normally I Don't Buy DVDs
I knew I had to buy this movie after I saw it on t.v. Love Helen Hunt and Scarlett Johannson in this beautifully costumed and scenic movie based on the play, Lady Windermere's Fan, by Oscar Wilde. Here's an example of the movie being better than the play script. Although different from the play, I actually like the movie better. Great date night movie or Girls' Night In choice. My friends who borrowed it loved it, too.I knew I had to buy this movie after I saw it on t.v.
