A very fine account by Boris Pasternak's niece of how the events of his own life, and particularly his long-term love affair with a much younger woman, provided the material for his towering masterpiece, Doctor Zhivago. Anna Pasternak gives a full account of his life, his tightrope-walk relationship with the Soviet authorities who could only get at him through his adulterous relationship, his contradictory personality & finally the drama of his battle to risk everything by getting Zhivago published. Boris Pasternak was no Yuri Zhivago....self-obsessed & narcissistic, yet also a great poet......he allowed his "Lara" to spend years in the gulags, & at times it's difficult not to despise him. Yet the account of his final months & death so soon after the pyrrhic victory of winning (then refusing) the Nobel Prize, cannot fail to move. The abiding impression left is of a great but flawed man who had the good fortune to be loved beyond comprehension by a wonderful woman. Profoundly impressive.Read full review
