This book gives a deep, and balanced glimpse into the life of one of the best known Catholic priests of of the 20th century. Reeves also provides interesting snapshots of the political, social, and religious intrigues and issues that surrounded Sheen as he found his calling and established his mission. The book is open about both Sheen's strengths and weaknesses, neither painting him as an ivory statue, nor as a selfish demagogue. An honest picture begins to emerge, showing Sheen as a great Catholic priest and spokesman for the Church. One of the most interesting aspects of Sheen's life, besides his incredible list of converts to Catholicism, is the story of his focus and struggle against Communism, apparently rampant throughout America, Europe, and even in certain parts of the Church. If you want a balanced picture of Archbishop Sheen and his work, his enemies, and his concerns, this book is a great source. Pleasant to read but excellently researched, I would recommend this book. Bishop Sheen was respected on both side of my family. To explain, my mother is Methodist and my father is Catholic so Bishop Sheen was listen to and watched in both households. Even though he was pro-Catholic, his message appealed to all denomination who loved Christ, America and Democracy. He was on top of where history was going to take us and tried to show us the right path so history wouldn't repeat itself. This much respected man was short changed by the Vatican by not making this man a Cardinal and the pettiest among other preist. This is a great book for Catholics and anyone who wants to know about the Catholic faith. Bishop Sheen is still bring people closer to God, America and Democracy.
