For a description of the origin of this project,do a web search on "DL4YHF frequency counter PIC" This kit additionally has a "crystal tester" which is not very highly regarded. The frequency counter itself (Wolf's part) is very good. My kit has a 16-pin DIP socket for a 18-pin DIP. Whoops. Not a big deal to replace, but it could be confusing. This is a pretty easy kit to build, but there are no instructions for use. You may end up wondering what the tactile button is for: it is to enable some of the features such as frequency offsets. The real value in this kit is the program for the PIC microcontroller. See Wolf's page for an explanation and a large number of mods that various people have done.

I have been in electronics all my life, including servicing tv and radio as a teenager in the 1950's. I spent 3 years in the army as a radar repairman in a HAWK missile unit after 8 months training in electronics. I was a radio repair technician in the mi state police for 30 years. I was involved in everything from tubes to surface mount technology. I also have been a ham radio operator since 1960, and built much of my early equipment. I have assembled dozens and dozens of heathkits over the year, so suffice it to say, I know how to solder. I built TWO of these boards, and they never worked. I troubleshot them, and found that all the discrete components worked flawlessly, including checking out the display. using an oscilloscope and fluke vom, everything checks out but the pic, which was sent in an anti static bag along with everything else. should have been inserted in antistatic foam. very disappointed , thought the 2d one would work.Read full review

Recently (january 2018) I bought 2 of these kits and built them. Here are my notes valid for both samples. The frequency counter part is working fine but coud not be adjusted with the variabel capacitor. For some reason there is a deviation in the reading of approximately 1% on all ranges. Furthermore I found that the programm function on both samples did NOT work. A pity but as I am not using any preset, it is no problem for me. The X-tal tester function does work but not for frequencies below 5 MHz and above about 35 MHz.

This frequency counter fits de needs of 90% of the average user. One drawback: sensitivity is not high. The crystal tester works surprinsingly well: I've tested quartz of 35MHz fudamental, not an overtone one ! A very uncommon value... One tip: don't hold the crystal between your fingers during the measurement or it will not start.

This comes as a PC board and a bag of parts with no instructions. However the board is clearly marked with component descriptions so it is easy to assemble. You can also download photos and descriptions from on-line sites. I built 2 of these units and both work fine. It does not have an input preamp so it does require an input signal level of several volts. A nice feature is the autoranging which gives the maximum number of digits for any frequency. Its resolution is 1 Hz which is fine for most applications. It includes a trimmer capacitor to adjust the reference clock but I found it to be accurate as it comes. In all, a very good value.
