Richard Matheson wrote the novel I AM LEGEND and from it two motion pictures were made. The first being THE LAST MAN ON EARTH starring Vincent Price in 1964 which was true to the novel's plot all people on earth are changed into vampires because of a rabat bat disease. LAST MAN was a lame motion picture at the time of it's release in 1964 due to Beatlmania and the changing times. But it's now considered a cult classic and is one of Vincent Price's finest performances that has gone unnoticed over the years. The second movie version was THE OMEGA MAN from 1971 starring Charlton Heston. It had a more up dated plot about a biological war between Red China and the Soviet Union over borders. Heston plays military scientist Colonial Robert Nevil who becomes the last man on earth in the city of Los Angeles after the germ warfare has wiped out all people. People who are infected by the bacteria from the germ war fare are quickly killed off. In some cases they are turned into pathological killers. And in some rare cases, the younger generation are somewhat immune to the bacteria. Heston is stalked and pursued by the pathological killers who are led by a religious former tv political analyst who takes this small society of people down a path that only ends in death for all. They believe Heston and the others who were like him were the cause of man kind's down fall and believe him to be an evil omen that has to be killed and destroyed. A Humorous scene in the OMEGA MAN is Charlton Heston Seeking a new automobile because he crashes his LTD Ford in the opening scenes trying ro avoid hitting a derelict armored truck left from a robbery. He then walks into an abandoned car dealership seeking a car replacement when he stumbles onto a dead sales man propped over on his desk, Heston carries on a so-called haggling conversation with the corps while prepping up a 1971 Ford Mustang Convertible for driving. Then as he Starts up the Mustang, Heston crashes through the main showroom windows with the car with a closing statement to the corpse of the dead salesman "Thanks alot you cheating Bastard!" Another Scene that does catch emotion, is Charlton Heston stops off at a movie theater to pass the time by watching a movie that he starts upwith a generator. The movie he watches is WOODSTOCK and scenes are shown of the 1969 rock extravaganza with Heston watching and reading word for word the lines from WOODSTOCK showing the once emotionalism of when the world was alive. The movie was made in 1971 and the time frame of when the down fall of mankind due to the biological war supposedly had taken place in late 1977. Warner Brothers has another new updated version of THE OMEGA MAN starring Will Smith as Colonial Robert Nevil called I AM LEGEND named after Richard Matheson's classic Novel due out 12/14/07. And For you Movie trivia buffs: THE OMEGA MAN role was offered to Clint Eastwood originally but declined because he began his directing career with his directorial debut PLAY MISTY FOR ME released in 1971 the same year as OMEGA MAN! Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I Am Legend has been filmed 3 times (plus a 2007 direct to video production). The novels main character Robert Neville is (apparently) the sole survivor of a plague that turns humans into vampire-like creatures. Neville hunts them during the day, and defends his home against them at night. The first film adaptation is The Last Man on Earth, filmed in 1964 and released in America in 1966 starring Vincent Price. In Last Man the victims of the plague are zombies, and that film can be credited with being the first of numerous zombie movies. George Romero’s cult classic Night of the Living Dead was inspired by I Am Legend. The Omega Man, released in 1971 is the second film that traces its roots to I Am Legend. In this adaptation the creatures infected by the plague become albino mutants who reject the technology that created the plague, and seek to destroy all normal humans who they hold responsible for their condition. Charlton Heston plays U.S. Army Col. Robert Neville, who has developed a vaccine which renders him immune to the plague. He prowls the streets of Los Angeles during the day, killing the mutants, and searching for other survivors. Overall, the film is somewhat entertaining, but suffers from the dialogue which is just too 1970ish and while it might have sounded “hip” then, is just stilted now. Overall grade – a C – not horrible, not great, just passing. Read full review
