I have used the Nissin Di866 Pro flash for many yrs. Some say there is no service available. That is not true at all ! The USA distributor is a company up North named "MINOX" in New Hampshire. And they are very good & professional. Two men, Bruce & Greg are excellent to work with for any problem that may come about on your NISSIN flashes. I have 2 Di-866 units and I have shot dance recitals, weddings, graduation & senior photo shoots, parties, indoor sporting and the Nissin Di866 has never let me down! Tilt, bounce swivel, sub-flash head, +/- compensation, plus three different ways to fire multi flash units wirelessly and the Di-866 has a PC sync port, mini USB for upgrades/downloads as well as a external battery socket to add any battery pack that is compatible with the Canon CP-E4 battery pack. I have 2 battery packs, one each for each NISSN Di866. One takes 8 AA & the other takes 6 AA batteries ! And those will double or triple your battery output ! And let's not forget, the NISSIN Di866 is the only speedlight that has a full color display that rotates from Portrait or Landscape depending on which way your shooting !!Read full review
I am a professional wedding photographer and at first I was a bit worried if the Di866 pro flash will let me down at my shoots! I can freely say now that the flash is as good as any of the dedicated flash and in some instances even outperforms the big brands. Features such as fill in sub flash, digital color display, audible signal for studio work and price difference of almost $190 US are serious factors for me to add the Nissin flash to my arsenal. The only cons about this flash is the built quality, it is not as good as Canon/Nikon, but definitely not that bad to be a turn off factor! If your image look is important and you have extra budget go with the big brands, but I can easy recommend the Nissin Di866 flash to any amateur, enthusiast or professional level photographer.
I bought this flash 3 weeks back. It worked for less than 2 weeks. I sent request for support to Nissin (email)a week back and it remained unanswered. When I tried to pair it wireless with a Nissin 622, it got frozen and I could only remove the batteries and put them back. After that, the flash would not sync on Auto and TTL. It fires before the shutter opens so that all photos are underexposed because they actually don't get any light. I reflashed the firmware and no change. The flash is with Nissin distributor in Dubai waiting an answer from Nissin (same as me). I found the same problem with some guys in the forums but nobody answered back either they could fix the issue or not. Although the finishing of the product is pretty nice, read the reviews before you go for one.
It is a very good flash, Main feature is the sub flash, while bouncing the flas you can switch on the sub flash and fill the light to avoid the shadow under the eyes.
The Di866 is 134x74x110mm and weighs 380g, while the 580EXII is 134x76x114mm and weighs 375g. Weights are without batteries. Very close match. In the box is the flash, a soft case, a stand with tripod screw, a fold-out sheet with quick instructions (as opposed to the small book you get with the 580EXII), and a CD-ROM presumably with a detailed manual and software for firmware updates (not sure, haven't looked yet, haven't needed to). The build quality is surprisingly good. I wouldn't say it's as good as the 580EXII, but might come close to the 430EX. The hot-shoe foot is plastic, not metal like the 580EXII, but everything feels sturdy and don't really have any concerns.
