About this product

Product Information

Bawdy, joyous, messy, hysterically funny, and guaranteed to offendregardless of religion, race, national origin, sexual orientation, or profession Between the Bridge and the River is the debut novel by Craig Ferguson, host of CBS's The Late Late Show . Two childhood friends from Scotland and two illegitimate half-brothers from the American South suffer and enjoy all manner of bizarre experiences which, as it turns out, are somehow interconnectedand, surprisingly enough, meaningful. An eclectic cast of characters includes Carl Jung, Fatty Arbuckle, Virgil, Marat, Socrates, and Tony Randall. Love, greed, hope, revenge, organized religion, and Hollywood are alternately tickled and throttled. Impossible to summarize and impossible to stop reading, this is a romantic comic odyssey that actually deliversand rewards.

  • Laugh at the Late Late Show? Laugh during the day too!

Sometimes if I'm still awake late at night, I enjoy watching Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show. His fast, not-stop, stream of conscious humor helps me fall asleep with a smile. He seems to be an incredibly intelligent man, as well, so when I discovered he had written a fiction book, I decided to pick it up. (Thank you eBay.) I enjoyed BETWEEN THE BRIDGE AND THE RIVER. It was a quick read and brought many a smile and a few chuckles. It felt disjointed, however, jumping from character to character and back and forth in time. I didn't feel like some of the conflicts had been resolved at the end and wanted more. The humor reminded me a little of Steve Martin's books like THE PLEASURE OF MY COMPANY or THE SHOPGIRL only not as sophisticated. I do recommend this book, but like ...

  • Between the Bridge and the River

As a lover of the English language and of good storytellers, I watch Craig Ferguson's Late, Late Show every morning while I have my coffee. Reading this book, it was a revelation to discover the depth of his self-awareness and the originality of his characters and story. I read it in a couple days and was entertained throughout. It is nothing like the wonderful monologues he and his writers put together for the t.v. show. Both are good in their own way, but the book is a whole other side to his ability to tell a great story. You have to wonder how the man finds enough time in each day to do what he does. I hope he's not a chronic insomniac because I would hate to see this light burn out. Can't wait for his next one!

  • A Fast-Paced, Witty, Snarky Story of Redemption

Craig Ferguson's debut novel, "Between the Bridge and the River," is a witty, fast-paced, snarky story about an ensemble of characters that have been friends since their childhood in Glasgow. The tale casts a jaundiced eye on media debaucheries and petty indulgences, tossing in riffs on everything from Starbuck's to escort ads. Ferguson is particularly critical of Hollywood and its abyss of vanities. Fraser, the Scottish TV evangelist has been disgraced in a sex scandal. His cancer-stricken boyhood pal, George, contemplates suicide. Sit-com star, angelic singer, and ladies' man Leon searches for a career in entertainment. Leon's 300-pound, sexually perverted, illegitimate half-brother wants to represent him, but is distracted by his many perversions. ...

  • Booze, drugs, rage, love and designer clothes

Riveting. Memoir thinly disguised as novel. Stylistically reminiscent of Douglas Adams & Kurt Vonnegut. Multi-character driven, representing the multi-facets of the author's (previously) thoroughly sodden, drug-addled brain. A frequently hilarious but painful history (of those bits he can remember!) that gently segues into clear-eyed redemption. Of a non-biblical sort.

  • Ferguson surprises and excites in his real-to-life tale

One of the best novels I've ever read in my life. And I read alot. Usually in other genres though. Mr Ferguson's talented voice is so clear and strong and unique. He TELLS the story, a bit like a comic, a bit like a narrator, a bit like someone who knows the interrelated truth between the human state and family and the earth and the spiritual and the entertainment industry - and he doesn't spare any tactfully rough, naturally spontaneous, commentary about WHAT he knows. I hope Mr Ferguson writes more novels. He has my blessing and support.
