About this product

Product Information

Directed by Sam Mendes and based on the graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner, the Depression-era crime epic ROAD TO PERDITION stars Tom Hanks as Michael Sullivan, a quiet hit man who is duty bound to Mafia boss John Rooney (Paul Newman). The mobster's close bond with Sullivan, however, leads Rooney's jealous blood son, Connor (Daniel Craig), to orchestrate a tragic series of events that results in Sullivan on the run with his 12-year-old son, Michael Jr. (Tyler Hoechlin). Soon an unscrupulous crime photographer/assassin named Maguire (Jude Law) is sent after Sullivan and his son, and Sullivan must decide on a course of action as young Michael comes to terms with his father's violent way of life.Meticulously directed by Mendes and brilliantly photographed by Conrad Hall, each scene of ROAD TO PERDITION has the composition of an expertly crafted painting. Making effective use of rain, snow, and shadows, the filmmakers create a cinematic world that's as dark, cold, and unforgiving as many of its inhabitants. But the film also allows for glimpses of emotional warmth, particularly in Sullivan's relationships with his son and Rooney, his surrogate father. In these roles, the respective actors create complex characters that resonate even in their restraint. Hanks is outstanding as a man of action with little time for words, while Hoechlin creates an unsentimental portrait of a confused boy; Newman once again proves why he's a screen legend and, in a strikingly unflattering role, Law makes the most out of his screen time as a creepy, parasitic hit man. Even in its harshest moments, however, Mendes never fails to remind the audience that ROAD TO PERDITION is a film about fathers and sons; and this is what elevates it from an atmospheric gangster movie to a truly astonishing work of art.

Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, good actors.

It had 2 very good actors, Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. The story was interesting, but I didn't like the violence and killing. Some people don't mind that, so they would probably enjoy it more than I did.

  • I Wasn't Too Sure

But I was wrong..this is a fantastic movie..Tom Hanks plays a quiet hit man who has a conscience..when he's sent on a hit his Son curious as to what his dad does for a living hops on board for the ride he sees more then he's suppose to..afraid his son will talk the Mob Boss' son orders a hit on the entire family..the hitman kills the Mother and youngest Son afraid for his oldest Sons safety Hanks packs them both up and hits the road..deciding to take his Son to his dead wifes sister in "Perdition" he does what he has to to ensure his Sons survival..this film starts out good and ends on a sad note..Hanks is great as the quiet nicely dressed hitman. Jude Law will freak you out as the creepy photographer with an agenda..I give this film 5 out of 5 bars!

  • A Great Movie

I don't know how this movie didn't go bigger!? I bought it off eBay for around $4 after s&h, and I'm very happy with it. Tom Hanks stars as a hitman. When one of Hank's sons curiously follows him one night while Hanks is "running an errand" he finds his father's a hitman. The boy is spotted by Hanks and a fellow hitman. When the mafia finds out about the whole incident, they want Hank's whole family dead!!! This puts Hanks on the Road to Perdition(a town) trying to protect what he has left of his family while wiping out his former mafia 1 by 1. And you better watch out as Jude Law who plays an incredibly freaky photographer who "shoots the dead" This movie is honestly the best movie I've bought on here, dollar for dollar. The movie is set in like the 20's or 30's er so, so everything's ...

  • Road to Perdition (DVD, 2003

This was a good movie although just a little slow on the uptake. This is a depression-era epic about a low-key contract killer, hit man, Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) who works for a mob boss, John Rooney (Paul Newman). Sullivan goes on a job one night, and his twelve-year-old son sneaks along inside the car trunk, and sees first hand what his father does for a living. The mobster's son, Connor (Daniel Craig), is jealous of his father's relationship with Sullivan and a tragic series of events begin with the murders of Sullivan's wife and child. Now he and his son are on the run from the mob amid a cloud of unremorseful violence. Two fathers are pitted against each other over the love of their sons, and there can only be one way for this to end. This is a cold and sinister movie.
