About this product

Product Information

Ignatius J. Reilly of New Orleans, --selfish, domineering, deluded, tragic and larger than life-- is a noble crusader against a world of dunces. He is a modern-day Quixote beset by giants of the modern age. In magnificent revolt against the twentieth century, Ignatius propels his monstrous bulk among the flesh posts of the fallen city, documenting life on his Big Chief tablets as he goes, until his maroon-haired mother decrees that Ignatius must work.

Funniest book I have ever read

I first read A Confederacy Of Dunces as I traveled by plane around the USA on business. Several times I was laughing so hard that the traveler next to me would write down the name of the book because they wanted to read it. My stars, I wish the author John Kennedy Toole had written more books but, alas, he ended his own life early on.

  • Top critical review

    Sophomoric humor.

Bought for my brother. He's 40 pages in and says it's a lot of sophomoric humor using farts and puke as comedy, something he doesn't find funny. Nor do I. It must appeal to a lot of other people as it won a posthumous Pulitzer. Oh well.

  • Charming but Pulitzer Prize?

Frivolously fun romp about a social misfit and oddball cast of supporting characters set in early 1960's New Orleans. The book slowly meanders through a lose plot to a climax that brings it all together. While the book is a funny read, you get the feeling that the Pulitzer Prize (awarded posthumously) was given more for the tragic ending of the author (J.K. Toole) then the actual quality of writing. Reading a little about the author also takes a little of the humor away from the book as it starts to read as more of a cry for help then a comical fiction. All in all not a great book (many will disagree) but solidly good.

  • Confederacy of Dunces - A Katrina Story

Living only 2 hours north of New Orleans, and with all the problems the city is experiencing since Katrina, I decided to re-read the Confederacy of Dunces, now almost 15 years since the first reading. The book is amazingly on target, even today, with that which makes New Orleans one of the most inspiring, yet troubled cities in America. I have known all those characters portrayed so masterfully by Toole, and highly recommend a revisit to the masterpiece, or even better, a first time look for those who missed the book's debut, and love humor and social commentary.

  • A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

I asked my mother what she wanted for Xmas, and she told me that she wanted this book, which she had let someone borrow years ago, never to see it again. She told me that it is the funniest book she had ever read. I found a nice copy of it on eBay and ordered it. Since it arrived well before Xmas, I decided to read it myself. I must concur with my mother's appraisal. It is the funniest book I have evr read! I was in pain from laughing in several instances. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would appreciate a well-written, hilarious read. It is truly one of a kind.
