Reviews
"I felt many things while reading this book -- which I did in one overnight sitting -- but when I reached the last page I felt only one: a tremendous respect for its author and a deep appreciation of just exactly how courageous she is to publish this book. This is no celebrity addiction memoir. And it is no 'former child star falls from grace' saga, either. It is the heart-wrenching and perilous story that thousands and thousands of perfectly ordinary women and men lived themselves, silently, numbly, and with obedience and love. By making her search for redemption public -- despite the inevitable backlash -- Mackenzie Phillips may very well help others find it for themselves. Rich with compassion, forgiveness, and wisdom, this is a brave memoir executed with an unwavering loyalty and commitment to truth." -- Augusten Burroughs

    Intriguing

It's great reading. Mackenzie is the perfect author. I feel like her friend. Always wondered what happened to her. A human making human mistakes and trying to live life anyway. I appreciate her.

  • Top critical review

    Well

It would have been nice to know the book was missing its book sleeve and I'd have a plain looking grey hardcover version of the book I wanted. No outside book cover with celebrity photos and book details. I love my book. I did purchase it used, but it would have been nice to know I wasn't getting the entire 'used' product I meant to buy.

  • Incomplete title - just doesn't say enough.

MacKenzie's story is missing her admission that earlier on she always had a choice and her sense of denial speaks volumes. As she progressed with her drug usage and substance abuse - she became the victim of repeated incest and sexual abuse. As a victim she still defends her father. She had the world and fantastic opportunities - only to blow most all of it away with a life-style of addiction. After reading this book, you will probably never look at the original or the new Mommas and the Poppas in the same light. A lot was going on back then that the public never heard or even got the honest story. Suggested reading for teens and high schoolers for a fact-filled autobiography loaded with incest, alcohol abuse, constant drug use and addiction.

  • Sad story about such a talented girl who threw it all away for drugs & sex.

I also grew up watching "One Day at a Time", loved it! I was so excited to read this book, heard so much about it and so could not wait to get it and get started. Personally, I was a bit disappointed. I'll tell you why... I know that this girl had a tough life, but it far surpassed anything I could imagine, also knew she was into drugs, again not as much as what she actually was though! Unreal, just unreal. She was forced to grow up way too early, totally unfair. Her father was a sad excuse for a father, pathetic actually. But what I was disappointed in was that the story was just downright dreadful. I know its life for some, but the entire book was about nothing but drug abuse, sex, and downright poor stupid decisions. She had no guidance whatsoever, and its so sad to read, again, I ...

  • Good read at first, but..

Poor lady, I must say. But, the book seemed ok at first, until you begin to realize that 90% is her talking about drugs, rehan, leaving rehab, entering rehab, etc etc! It was exhausting. The part I enjoyed most was her going over the show "so weird" since I liked it as a kid. I also found her various relationships, and marriages interesting. All in all, just ok unless you don't mind the constant drug chatter...
