About this product

Product Information

Long before there were creative-writing workshops and degrees, how did aspiring writers learn to write? By reading the work of their predecessors and contemporaries, says Francine Prose. In Reading Like a Writer , Prose invites you to sit by her side and take a guided tour of the tools and the tricks of the masters. She reads the work of the very best writersDostoyevsky, Flaubert, Kafka, Austen, Dickens, Woolf, Chekhovand discovers why their work has endured. She takes pleasure in the long and magnificent sentences of Philip Roth and the breathtaking paragraphs of Isaac Babel; she is deeply moved by the brilliant characterization in George Eliot's Middlemarch . She looks to John Le Carr for a lesson in how to advance plot through dialogue, to Flannery O'Connor for the cunning use of the telling detail, and to James Joyce and Katherine Mansfield for clever examples of how to employ gesture to create character. She cautions readers to slow down and pay attention to words, the raw material out of which literature is crafted. Written with passion, humor, and wisdom, Reading Like a Writer will inspire readers to return to literature with a fresh eye and an eager heart.

  • No point writing without a passion for reading!

Interviewed by The Atlantic online on her 2006 book "Reading Like A Writer", writer and professor Francine Prose has a few interesting comments on reading and writing: "Another time, in yet another graduate classroom, the students asked, as they sometimes do, “What are you reading?” I said, “I’m rereading Crime and Punishment“. And there’s this feeling you get when there’s nothing coming back at you from the room. That’s the feeling I was getting. So I said, “Have any of you ever read Crime and Punishment?” Silence. “Have any of you read anything by Dostoevsky?” More silence. And these were graduate students." "I don’t quite get it. On a very basic level, I can’t figure out why people would want to write unless they like to read. I mean, what would be the point? For the incredibly ...

  • Worth the read

The author takes us up close to how other writers tell a story. Divided in chapters including dialogue, character, and description. My favorites were gestures and details.

  • A must-have tool for the aspiring writer

I had seen a review of this book in a newspaper. I was immediately interested because I want to increase my skills as a writer. The very first chapter gave me some insight into how other writers work, something I had never thought of before. That alone was worth the price of the book. The only drawback is that it takes a long time to read, even though it is not a large book, simply because you have to concentrate on each paragraph so you don't miss an important point. Whether you are a writer now or would like to be, this is an important reference book for you.

  • Great Reading on Writing

Prose does a wonderful job weaving great, concise writing advice with examples of great writing and insights into what makes it great.

  • A classic about the classics.

I love the way she leads you into enjoying the classics even more. I have found many more books to enjoy and have just begun to savor them.
