About this product

Product Information

In this rich and deeply satisfying novel by the beloved author of The Art of Mending , and Open House , a resilient woman embarks upon an unforgettable journey of adventure, self-discovery, and renewal. Betta Nolan moves to a small town after the death of her husband to try to begin anew. Pursuing a dream of a different kind of life, she is determined to find pleasure in her simply daily routines. Among those who help her in both expected and unexpected ways are the ten-year-old boy next door, three wild women friends from her college days, a twenty-year-old who is struggling to find his place in the world, and a handsome man who is ready for love. Elizabeth Berg's The Year of Pleasures is about acknowledging the solace found in ordinary things: a warm bath, good food, the beauty of nature, music, friends, and art. "Berg writes with humor and a big heart about resilience, loneliness, love, and hope. And the transcendence that redeems," said Andre Dubus about Durable Goods . And the same could be said about The Year of Pleasures .

  • The Year of Pleasures Review

Elizabeth Berg's novel is an unforgettable piece that will leave the reader laughing and choking back tears. At times, I found it hard to read the book, especially when Betta is describing the life she had before her husband John died. The memories are so intrinsically written, the reader will feel as if they are reliving it too. Throughout the book, I would be overcome with feelings of wanting to grab Betta and just tell her that she will make it through and life will get better. I would recommend this book to anyone who has had a tragedy in their life (who hasn't?) or who has ever lost a loved one. The book can get depressing but it still has a good plot. I read it in about 3 1/2 hours, so it isn't too long.

  • The year of pleasure

A fair handling of early widowhood but way to many wonderful things happens to this woman than ever would happen in real life. The exploration of friendships are pretty good. The shop that the main character wants to open where she plans to sell a variety of precious little items that can give women comfort. I hve been in several of those shops and find them so depressing because there is a false sense that if the buyer purchases something frilly enough, cute enough or decadent enough it will fill the lonliness or grief in her life. I suppose me get the same results from the gadget stores.

  • A Woman's Book

I was told by a friend to read this book. I enjoyed the book and, because, of the death of a spouse I could relate to the feelings of the character. A great book especially for a women who has recently gone through this devasting time in their life. I could picture myself in similar situations as in the book.

  • great read

Wow what a great book, it really makes you think about your life. Would you be able to do what she did? Who really knows? A must read for all thinkers out there. Was purchased for a book club read and will defintley read again.

  • The Year of Pleasures

This is a wonderful, heart-warming story. Characters you hate to say good-bye to at the end; makes you wish you were a part of their lives.
