In director John Badham's WARGAMES, Matthew Broderick stars as David Lightman, a young hacker who accidentally logs on to the Department of Defense's network. Thinking that he's found a cool new computer game manufacturer, David plays checkers, chess, and other more intriguing games like Global Thermonuclear War. Realizing that their system has been tampered with, military operatives arrest him. However, the computer continues to play the "game" of thermonuclear warfare without David and generates the very real threat of World War III. In an attempt to prevent global disaster, David and his girlfriend, Jennifer (Ally Sheedy), search desperately for the scientist who designed the system before the goverment computer initates a full-scale nuclear war.A landmark of 1980s cinema, WARGAMES was keenly tuned into its time. Computers remained a relative mystery in the early 1980s, as they were used primarily by large corporations and government agencies, but not by many individuals at home. The general public had already been warned of the danger of computer takeover in 1968 with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and this paranoia grew as computers became more popular. The threat of communist takeover and nuclear war loomed large in the collective consciousness, before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the cold war. Video games had become highly popular, however, and for a generation of Pac-Man and Space Invaders players WARGAMES combined the country's deepest fears with its biggest fantasies. Badham's suspenseful film brings those fears to light in an exciting, fast-paced film with a great cast (Broderick, Sheedy, John Wood, Barry Corbin, Dabney Coleman) and excellent special effects.

    Exciting Film

    I love this movie. It has been a favorite since it first hit the screen. Great acting, believable story line, with tons of action and fun. Based on true events during the early '80's, concerning military strategy systems, being tested at the time, being compromised and possibly getting out of control. A Must See Film.

    Bought it for a movie forum, it is ideal for that, we had a great time!

    This is one of my favorite movies of all times. I saw it for the 1st time in 1986 and simply loved it. Since then I have watched it occasionally always with the same delight. In my university we have a movie forum program called "The Future of the Past" where we see old movies that were futuristic by their time. I bought this one to watch it in this forum so young students could see computers from early 80's, what a global thermonuclear war threat was, and how teenagers environment of that age was. This is a ideal movie for that purpose. We enjoyed watching it and discussing things like old myths about computers that still subsist, what is really artificial intelligence, the role of programmers and several other things.     Entertaining. And the theme is as fresh today with IOT, cyber war & N. Korea as it was back then.

    It's a classic, must see movie. Great cast. Great plot. The theme is as fresh today as it was back then. The players may have changed and the tech is different but the bottom line is still the same. For the old folks, has fun, nostalgic 80s set / tech / etc. Broderick is spot on.

    A real look at the way cyber space can be terrifying!

    Saw this film years ago but it is well worth the revisit. Who has access to launch codes to start a nuclear war? Watch how a nerd high school kid with a real talent for hacking gets further into cyber space than he expected. What does he do with this information? When a girl from school stops by he tries to impress her with his hacking skills. The clock is ticking and the FEDS are on his heels. You really get a nail biting view of a nuclear war in the making. Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheely are brilliant as the teens and Dabney Colman at his best!

    Intro to hacking films

    Just saw this again via eBay dvd. Definitely better than some Hollywood hacking films, with a lot of familiar and solid talent in both lead and supporting roles. Still addresses some continuing issues surrounding hacking, even if the tech looks dated; I like the special-features interviews with the principals involved. Fun, and thought-provoking. Thumbs way up.
