    exceptional and authoritative work

    This is not at all what I expected when io purchased this book. I had thought it would be a highly personal account of the author's experiences in IJN submarines during WWII. There is that, but more importantly it is a very accurate and highly detailed overview of the entire submarine campaign of the Imperial Navy. Orita makes no arguments about the fact Japan lost the war. However, he claims (and with a good deal of persuasive argument ) Japan lost not due to American strategy and might but due to Japanese negligence in taking advantage of opportunities and stupidity in the use of it's forces. An extremely engrossing and fascinating work which i was glad to add to my collection.

    I Boat Captain

    The Japanese burned most of their WW2 wartime records so there's not a lot of information available. This is an excellent book written by someone who was there that experienced the Japanese side of the WW2 Pacific War. This book is available in paperback so anyone can afford it.
