About this product

Product Information

Despite its acclaim as one of the world's greatest operas, Georges Bizet's CARMEN was such a failure at its 1875 premiere that it led the composer to a heart-attack death only three months later at the age of 36. Based on a novella by Prosper Merimée, the opera tells the tragic story of the Spanish gypsy Carmen, who seduces naive soldier Don José only to betray him with the lusty matador Escamillo. Conductor Giorgio Croci leads the Stagione d'Opera Italiana in this open-air performance of the passionate opera staged at Rome's ancient quarry St. Margarethen in 1998.

I love the music - the DVD didn't really work that well in my primary DVD player - didn't want to display subtitles that it says are present. Not really sure why.

  • horrible

The subtitles don't work, so I would have to watch the opera in French, or I would have to find and buy the score (since I am a tenor) but not on your life. It goes to the far back on my shelf, along with other dvd mistakes I have made.
