About this product

Product Information

Colonel David H. Hackworth, one of America's most decorated soldiers, lays bare his most daring and legendary tour of duty. 1966With a full year of Vietnam combat and five months of in-country intense after-action analysis under his pistol belt, Hackworth pens the classic tactical handbook the "Vietnam Primer with military historian Samuel Marshall. In a radical shift from the World War II-era tactics then employed in Vietnam, Hackworth stresses the necessity of using disciplined, small units of well-trained men to best fight the hit-and-run warfare of the elusive Viet Cong. "Out G'ing the G," he called his tactics. 1969Hackworth's expertise lands him back in Vietnam. The Army's message is clear-put up, or shut up. Given the "hopeless," morale-drained 4/39th-an infantry battalion of poorly led draftees with one of the Army's worst casualty rates-Hackworth leads from up front and finds the best in every one of his grunts. Together, they take a page from the VC, write their own book, and become the meanest in the Mekong Delta-the Hardcore Recondos. 2002With the U.S. again facing elusive insurgent foes-and the hit-and-run tactics of the international terror networks we're presently up against-the 4/39th Hardcore Battalion's successes provide hard-won lessons-learned that are more applicable now than ever. A tour de force of frontline combat action, "Steel My Soldiers' Hearts takes readers alongside sniper missions, into grunt ambush actions, above fields of fire with hard-hitting helicopter strikes, and inside the quagmire of command politics. Hackworth graduates the Mekong Delta brotherhood into the pantheon of our nation's most heroic warriors.

Colonel Hackworth, bless his soul, was truely a soldiers soldier. A great and outstanding officer.

A very good story of how an officer could turn an infantry battallion into a great fighting force. Top Dayoc was my company sergeant, Delta Co. 1st/ 327th infantry 101st Airborne. Also, Hackworth was once a commander with the 327th. A great read...

  • Steel My Soldiers Hearts

Some of the stories in this book were about the 191st Assault Helicopter Co. being in Dong Tam, Vietnam in early 1969. I was assigned to this unit at that time as a helicopter mechanic and alot of our ships supported Col. Hackworth's infantry troops. This is the reason that I bought the book, but Hack makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the battles as he describes the action. The story is about a bunch of deadbeat troops being turned around into a Hardcore unit by the Colonel. There is no doubt in my mind if Hack would have been running the War, we would not have lost! If you like war stories, you will like this book!!! This story would make a great movie and needs to be told!

  • Tet, Rice Paddies, Loss of friends, Death, Training

Helps with understanding some of the things that Vietnam Veterans experienced during the Vietnam War. From the Officers to the Grunts in the rice paddies and monsoon. Brings back memories of my time in the Nam.

i FOUND MY BOOK IN THE BUSHES TODAY AND IT IS A GREAT LOOKING BOOK I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THIS SELLER. THE BOOK HAS A DEEP INSIGHT OF WHAT THESE BRAVE MEN HAD TO GO THREW IN THE 1960 THREW THE 1970,THE VERY HARSH CONDITIONS OF VIETNAM THE RAIN, WALKING THREW MUD AND WAIST DEEP IN WATER,THE PICTURES SHOW HOW HARD IT MUST OF BEEN FOR THE SOLDIERS HAVING TO FACE AMBUSHES THOSE THAT SERVED IN VIETNAM HAD IT VERY HARSH. IT TAKES ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS A KID SEEING THEM WHEN SOME OF THEM CAME HOME TO FITZSIMONS ARMY MEDICAL HOSPITAL.
