Synopsis
FORTHWITH I repaired to my own country, and brought back thence my mistress, that I might make her my wife. She, however, most violently disapproved of this, and for two chief reasons: the danger thereof, and the disgrace which it would bring upon me. She swore that her uncle would never be appeased by such satisfaction as this, as, indeed, afterwards proved only too true., This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original. Due to its age, it may contain imperfections such as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work., Historia Calamitatum is a memoir by the medieval French philosopher and theologian Peter Abelard. The book is written in the form of a letter to a friend, in which Abelard recounts his personal and professional struggles, including his controversial love affair with his student, Hlose. Abelard describes his rise to fame as a scholar and his subsequent downfall, which included castration and exile. Throughout the book, Abelard reflects on the nature of suffering and the role of divine providence in human affairs. Historia Calamitatum is considered a classic of medieval literature and a significant work in the history of autobiography.FORTHWITH I repaired to my own country, and brought back thence my mistress, that I might make her my wife.
