Possibly the best live album to come out of psychedelic San Francisco, with epic re-workings of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love and Mona. John Cipollina rules!

Happy Trails by Quicksilver Messenger Service....a late 60's classic on CD

This CD was originally released on vinyl in 1969, and is still Quicksilver Messenger Service's (QMS) most popular album. I know this because it's the only QMS album to achieve "Gold" status in the USA. It's a great example of the band in their heyday, about 2/3 of this album was recorded live. An edit of the song "Who Do You Love" was released as a single, and did receive some airplay on various FM radio stations. This CD is a great place to start for anyone curious about QMS, and great addition to anyone already familiar the the band.

    • Top critical review

      Think twice.

Yup, their best, superior to what they did in the studio. But that's not saying much. This was overrated then, hasn't improved over the years.

    • A forgotten classic you should have

Over forty years ago, I used to love this album as vinyl. Somehow, it got forgotten -- it's still in my stack of vinyl records in my office. Some of my friends were discussing Quicksilver on Facebook, and it made me remember this album. I got a CD on half.ebay.com and put it in my car. Normally, I only play CDs once, but I had somehow forgotten what a great recording this is. I still remember almost every note of the guitar solos, and they are among my favorite solos ever. I played it about five times through, and then listened to it one evening in my living room. I had intended to put it on while doing something, but Who Do You Love was so good, I closed my eyes and listed to the whole thing. This album is a true forgotten classic. If you want to hear some really fine playing ...

    • QMS is the best!

This was my favorite band from about age 11 up until I went to college. All these 'jam bands' that were popular in the last few years can't hold a candle to Gary and John - this guys are the real deal. I love being able to play both 'sides' together as one complete 50 minute concert without any breaks. Still sounds fresh. Hendrix made playing feedback a popular approach on the guitar, but Cipollina was the master.

    • Happy Trails - Quicksilver Messenger Service

Along with the Grateful Dead's "Live Dead," "Anthem of the Sun" and "Skullfuck" and the Jefferson Airplane's "Bless It's Pointed Little Head," "Happy Trails" represents the best live recordings of the San Francisco scene of 1967 - 1970. Quicksilver blazes through an astonishing set of material, including a couple of Bo Diddley covers and some studio originals, all featuring the absolutely unique and underappreciated guitar slinger, John Cipollina, and his counterpart player, Gary Duncan. Bassist David Freiberg and drummer Greg Elmore each have their own featured segment, and even the Fillmore West audience gets a piece of the action. One of the best live recordings of not only late sixties, but of the entire history of ...
