This had one crazy story. It is very intricate. Lots of options. When they say that "your weapon is choice" they aren't kidding. This game was scheduled to come out October 2009, was delayed and came out June 2010 due to pressure to meet deadlines. This caused them to kind of throw it together quickly. So the results of this is a couple of bugs in conversation and other aspects. This caused low sales (low advertising as well) and an announcement that they will not come out with a sequel. However it had a lot of potential which was a little sad that they did not take a couple extra months to iron out the bugs. I just finished the game and it was quite complex. I felt that I have only just brushed the surface in how much one can do in this game. I plan on playing it through at least once more to try other options. So all in all, good game. It could have been better if they would have spent more time on it but it is still worth playing. It probably is not worth the sixty bucks but if you can get it around thirty then it is definitely worth that much. I personally would have bought it for sixty for it, but I enjoy the creative aspects that the game brought (including story, unique conversations, and intricate missions) that most games rarely bring to the table.Read full review
Overall I thought this was a very good game minus some bugs. I read reviews of this game that were poor, so I avoided it for awhile. After playing it, I realized most poor reviews didn't even play past the intro/tutorial mission. Gameplay - Controls may seem frustrating at first since aiming isn't the best, but it is an RPG and you level up your gun skills, as well as the attributes of the guns them selves to help your aim improve throughout the game. One problem, which is prevalent with most 3rd person shooting games, is the A button does to much. Holding A allows you to run and snap into cover (Like Gears and Mass Effect), which sometimes makes you snap to a wall when you are trying to run away. Other then that, control scheme is similar to the mentioned games. Graphics - Graphics are not as sharp as some games, but they definitely are not bad. Don't let the intro mission fool you into thinking that the whole game is bland, just the Gray Box building is bland. Character models are fairly good, facial expressions and cut-scenes are fairly good as well. Some of the environments are actually quite pretty, and would be really good with a little more polish. I recommend turning off MOTION BLUR in the options as it makes the game look a little sharper. Story - One of the best stories I have played through in a game. Very relative to today's world and the government's role. If you are a conspiracy theorist you will especially love the story. Character Interaction - Similar to games like Mass Effect and Fallout how you talk to characters and can give good/bad speech choices. Since your a spy, the also throw in Suave speech choices. These however, are timed, so you have to think fast on how you would react to what people say. Pretty cool way to change up character interaction. I played through both this game and Mass Effect 2 at the same time. Although it is not as long as ME2, and not as polished (Graphics and Controls wise), I still found it to be very enjoyable. I plan on playing it through a 2nd time to see how different speech choices and character play style effect the game. Overall, if you pick this up for the $10-$20 range, it's a steal in my opinion. Sadly, reviews have hampered this game from ever getting a sequel, yet its Xbox User Rating is 4/5 stars.Read full review
Pros --------- With in the first 5 minits of the game I was inthraled over the interface and game play. This instantly becase a Top FAVE game of my library! I love the use of controls and lay out of the game. Cons ------- This game was laking correct mission or objective location diplay, I was unable to select a objective and then folow it. There was a serius lake in effective gun shooting as I HEAD shot a enemie and it did not kill him, this head shot just made him alert and able to fire off the alarm. This game needs to IMPROVE it's gun fire targeting, factor HEAD shot that many ppl love that INSTANT kill, with out alerting everything in the area. All in all I give this game 4 1/2 stars. out of 5 Injoyable and the mature lv was pleaseing.
This game does have "under the hood" problems such as the random hit rate when shooting down enemies. The common problem which occurs is that when you aim your reticule down on an enemy, the number crunching which occurs behind the scenes will find you constantly missing your target (especially with pistols). Because of this distressing combat problem, you will want to play as stealthy as possible, but stealth too has strange drawbacks. Sometimes enemies will be easily alerted to your presence, making playing stealth difficult, but if you can plan out your route carefully and bump up your stealth skill, it's bearable. Even though the combat has such problems, the element which makes this game worth playing is the intriguing story line and addictive dialogue system. If you have ever played "Mass Effect," then you will be familiar with how the dialogue works here. Essentially, during conversations, you will have to pick a certain stance to respond (irritated, suave, professional, etc) and the dialogue happens in real time which makes the flow of it feel more realistic and in turn makes the characters feel more alive. Despite the hair-pulling combat problems, if you are a fan of RPGs, this game's worth is compiled mainly from its story and dialogue system.Read full review
During production, Alpha Protocol sounded wonderfully inspired by great espionage films of our time. My head was in the clouds imagining how my secret agent would be as suave as James Bond or as professional and calculating as Jason Bourne. Unfortunately, Alpha Protocol fails its mission with unbalanced game mechanics, graceless combat and overwhelming graphical and artificial intelligence bugs that sabotage the whole experience. The Good - # Your choices have lasting impact on the story and gameplay # Lots of ways to approach missions and develop your character. The Bad - # The artificial intelligence is comical. # laky, glitchy cover mechanics # Bland visuals further marred by texture pop-in and bad animations # Terrible AI affects both the shooting and the stealth # The story lacks soul and character. Over all could have been a great game, it had a great concept but fell flat. Not worth full retail price of $60.00 but would be alright at $30 or less.Read full review
