The studio behind such persistent-world properties as EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies, and Free Realms lends its development expertise to this comics-themed online RPG, which has players fighting for good or evil alongside iconic heroes and villains from DC Comics. The story involves a cybernetically enhanced Lex Luthor traveling back in time to warn of a devious plot by Braniac to control the world. Luthor also brings with him a device that will grant super powers to ordinary citizens, allowing the world to unite against Braniac and his minions. Could Luthor be telling the truth, or is this merely an elaborate ruse by the criminal mastermind?<br><br>You will play as one of the newly "enhanced" citizens. Similar to City of Heroes and Champions Online, you'll create your own distinctive hero or villain, choosing from a variety of costume options, power sets, and travel options. The three movement types include super speed, flight, and acrobatics. Your character will also be able to draw powers from one of five areas of knowledge: fire, ice, mental, nature, sorcery, or gadgets, with each type offering two specializations. Nature, for example, has specialties in shapeshifting and plants.<br><br>To receive quests, your character must align him or herself with one of six mentors: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Joker, Lex Luthor, and Circe. The action-oriented combat system lets heroes throw objects (and even enemies), activate powers, and battle foes with fists or weapons. Characters can use martial arts, archery, dual pistols, hand blasters, staves, and other weapon types. The world in DC Universe spans multiple regions, including such notable areas as Gotham City, Metropolis, and Atlantis. In addition to player versus environment (PvE) content, special areas are available for player versus player (PvP) battles. A monthly subscription is required to keep playing the game after its initial 30-day trial expires.

What died in here?
Okay, now to qualify, I have played a superhero game a time or two in my day. And I have even wasted a bit of my life in cyberspace when I should have been doing other things, just so that I could soar over rooftops and answer cries for help from the citizens below. So I am no Janey-Come_lately to this party when I took a spin around DC Universe Online. Now, I am a huge DC fan. Superwoman, Supergirl, Captain Marvel, Power Girl and Zatanna costumes are all hanging in my closet and there are far too many photos me me galumphing around conventions and parties dressed up like a very tragic aging fangirl to deny my love for DC Comics. heck, the Halloween party that I throw every year was themed "Superfriends With Benefits" this year and 250 people crowded my backyard to show their geek ... Okay, now to qualify, I have played a superhero game a time or two in my day. The walls of my office are crammed with toys old and new, from my old and abused Mego Superman to the abundance of the DC Universe collection of figures that I have built with considerable help from ebay. So one might say that between these two facts, DC Universe Online was a dream come true for me. Sad how some dreams die, isn't it? First there's the requirements. my computer is old, yes, it is true. But 16 gigs to load in the game, seriously? Holy space hogs, Batman! Okay, okay, fine, we're still good... now as my mouse sluggishly drags across the screen with only 2 gigs of ram I can build my character. Huh, no iconic symbols, eh? No "S" shield, no "W" for the breastplate, no variants of the bat symbol, no Lantern symbols, Marvel lightning bolts... okay, okay, well, just play with what is there. The character designer is not at all intuitive, in designing the character's looks nor their powers, but okay, muddle through... And then we get to game play. And as Calvin Tran famously remarks, "Oh here go hell come now". Choppy? You betcha. Moving your character involves swinging the camera around with your mouse so that you can get behind them to steer them or just steering them blindly this way and that while tabbing between opponents. Yes, there is a map, which is handy in the starting adventure, but then once you are actually let loose in the game world I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. The system for equipping gear is slow and a bit poorly explained, and I never did figure out how to use charged items. Oh, and all that time you spent designing your character? It's moot. Because as you equip new gear it changes the look of your character- all you get is to determine your color scheme. Overall, after spending a few hours on this one and really, really wanting to like it, I have to say- if you want to see your favorite iconic characters, go read a comic or play Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. You'll get a lot more satisfaction out of it and much less heartbreak and frustration. And if you want to play a good superhero MMORPG where you can emulate and build versions of the DC characters, go play City of Heroes. It has a vastly superior engine, the character generation system gives amazing options and freedom, and you can have a good time... which, in the end, is the part that is so sorely lacking from DC Universe Online. It just isn't any fun to play.

How can I explain DC Universe online PC... Addictive. I have been playing since just after the first of December and the more that I play the more that I get out of it. The customization itself is amazing, but one thing you have to understand is that while you are able to customize your character while creating it, most of the customizing comes in game. Each piece of gear that you obtain in game via loot drops, bounty runs, raids, alerts (like a 4 man dungeon) duos and solo instances- each gear piece has a style connected to it that you can collect and when you equip a piece of gear you do not need to wear the style. You can lock your style tab so that you can keep a specific look. When starting your character you choose a mentor: For heroes -Superman -Batman -Wonderwoman For ... The Brainiac Invasion! All in all I would say that this is the best action MMO I have ever played and would say that it is a must play for any comic fan. One last thing... YOu will get the chance to dawn a suit inspired by some of your favorite DC comics Superheroes but you need to hit level 30 first and the style is connected to the upper level gear and it is not hard to earn... level 1-30 is just basic training and story mode for the game, all the real fun happens after level 30.

The quests are actually vocalized by the quest givers, and will provide some much needed back story to your missions to make you feel like you are doing something, as opposed to just griiiiiinding. Almost anything you see in this game can be destroyed. Barrels? EXPLOOOOODE. Cars? PICK UP AND THROOOOOWWWWW. You know what you can do in World of Warcraft with barrels and boxes and "cars"? Jump. Stare. Do nothing. DCUO is highly interactive. It is a true MMO with established and well-defined roles. The level cap is 30 and can be reached in a few days, at ... I'm hooked on this game. With enemies moving around in 3 dimensions and with your physical attacks being responsive to either clicks or button presses, it makes it hard to mouse click on someone who is flying all around you or rolling. Meh, there are so many awesome things about this game. Phat loots. Funny heroes and villains people make. yeah. Lets talk about bad things though. Temporary Problems currently happening (Jan 2011): servers are a little laggy syncing microphones due to heavy server traffic. The game has sold way more than expected in all regions on all consoles. Interface Input Lag: When playing with a controller, scrolling through the interface can be laggy, and typing without a keyboard is hard. Communication is a must in an online game. Queue problems: Sometimes you will find yourself in queue for a 4 man Alert (Instance) and you will load in and be the only person there and your only option is to leave. Bad queues for sure. Thats about it. I love this game. I cancelled my 6 year WoW subscription because DC Universe Online IS a better game. Honest and True. Plus, any game where you can put a long haired guy with a mustache into a green, white, and red track suit, and give him ice powers and two pistols is awesome. His name is Italian Ice, and he pwns you. No Man's Land server

DC Universe:Online is a very intuitive and fun gaming experience. I especially enjoyed building my own character and seeing how the powers that they possess increased as time went on. Getting help from the Heroes and Villains was also a blast! Five out of Five Stars!
